In Homer's depiction we see them as innocent by standards, but in the Penelopiad we see that they are used by Penelope to spy and keep the suitors busy till Odysseus is to return home. This is also the story of Penelope's twelve maids and their murder by Telemachus and Odysseus upon his return. The Penelopiad has been on my tbr list for quite some time and I wanted to read it for our Read a Myth challenge. Penelope narrates her story from Hades, where she and her contemporaries are spending eternity, with the occasional visit I loved how Atwood not only took a classic myth, framed it through the eyes of Penelope, but then offered the an additional academic interpretation of the story's meaning. The Penelopiad is Atwood playing around with the character of Penelope, Odysseus' long-suffering wife.
